El agente causal, <em>S. pneumonia<\/em>e, frecuentemente coloniza la nasofaringe en humanos, y se transmite principalmente a trav\u00e9s de gotas de saliva. En edad escolar un 20 a 60% de los ni\u00f1os est\u00e1n colonizados por la bacteria. La distribuci\u00f3n de los serotipos var\u00eda seg\u00fan la edad y regi\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica. La transmisi\u00f3n del neumococo ocurre por contacto directo de persona a persona.
